It all started with wanting a new puppy....

about 5 years after we lost our beloved Chloe, a 14 year old Golden Lab, I had kept leaving hints for my husband, Michael about puppies and the possibility of getting a new one.  He just wouldn't have it, but him knowing how badly I needed to care for something, he suggested we get chickens, with the stipulation they be meat birds because we could in turn fill our freezer, deeming them useful!  I was very reluctant, because I knew that I was going to fall in love with them instantly and there was no way that I could possibly eat one of my pets!

Finally with the decision made and agreeing to meat birds; 20 of the Red Broiler variety were ordered through Chick Days hosted through Peavey Mart.  Our baby chicks arrived in the mail on July 2nd, 2024 and in my excitement picked them up from Peavey Mart and drove them to their new home which was a brooder made out of a plastic bin that was inside the one bay of our garage along side my husband's shiny Sunset Orange 05' Corvette Convertible!!  Let's just say that the car did not stay shiny for long!

We had decided that our meat birds must be in a chicken tractor so they could enjoy their days with us moving them around the yard eating grass, weeds and bugs.  So the following weekend on a beautiful Sunday afternoon, we head to Peavey Mart to pick up supplies to build their temporary home and a within a few steps though the door all you could hear was the faint sound of baby cheeps!  So with the largest grin on my face I navigate towards the sound to only find the most adorable, precious bundles of joy with all their cuteness begging me to take them home!  My husband gave me the look that said "Don't you even think about it!!"

Throughout our time in Peavey Mart,  we would gravitate back to the center of the store to take a peak at the babies and when we had finished finding all we needed, we went to take one more look before heading to the till and my husband said "Well we might as well take 3 of those little guys home!"  I could not believe my ears and before he could change his mind found an employee so I could pick them out and get them home before it sunk in as to what he had done!  We put the little Prairie Bluebells in the with broilers and they got along splendid.

The very next morning when my husband woke up, he tells me that it isn't very cost effective to winter just 3 chickens in Saskatchewan, so why don't you go back to Peavey Mart today and pick up the 9 remaining chicks and with 12 chickens in total we will be supplied with eggs with some to spare for our family. When I arrived at Peavey Mart on my lunch break, to my disappointment, all the baby chicks had been sold .  I then went on the Chick Days website again and my husband agreed to order 6 Sapphire Gems and 3 Majestic Marans.  The order came July 24th and to my surprise, the hatchery had sent 9 Sapphire Gems and 6 Majestic Marans, and on a separate trip to Peavey Mart I decided to get 3 more and just slip them in with the others so my husband wouldn't notice.

Then we had to figure out where they were going to live and spend their days.  We had an old 5th wheel that my husband had purchased for parts, so we decided they were going to live the high life in a 5th wheel!!  So 'the trailer chicks' we became!!

One of my girls, laid her first egg on November 7th, 2024 and I have been an addict ever since!!  They are completely spoiled rotten and in turn they lay the biggest, golden yoked and delicious eggs you could possibly have and I couldn't be prouder!!  It was then I decided that I wanted others to be able to enjoy them and knew that this was not just going to be a hobby, this is our new way of life!!

The day came when it was time to butcher the broilers, and that was a very hard day!  I have tears in my eyes while I am writing this.  The birds and I had become such good friends and I had just completely enjoyed my time with them.  They made me laugh so often, because they had such great personalities.  I had decided to keep a Rooster ( Sunny) and 2 Hens ( Scarlet & Ruby) and would raise them with the rest of the flock.  Then one of our friends had some Gold Laced Wyandotte Roosters they couldn't keep, so we added Benny to our flock.  The boys lived in a separate room and had their own part of the run and everything worked out perfectly!

We have since  just purchased a larger 5th wheel, March 2025 and it will be the new home that is going to house roughly 75- 100 laying hens with 2 breeding pens, as our chicken family has grown from 2 Roosters & 22 laying hens, to include White Leghorns, Columbian Rocks, Barred Plymouth Rocks, Bielefelders, Cuckoo Marans, Ameraucanas & 6 Ayam Cemani!!  We have 8 Turkeys and 155 Cornish Cross Meat Birds we will be processing this year for sale just to get our feet wet haha!!

Then we decided that maybe we should try breeding the chickens we have to see what would happen and we hatched 47 out of 50 eggs to an amazing lucky mix that I call it!! We have some great looking birds that I can not wait to see what they will turn into.  Check out the gallery that will be updated constantly!!

I am going to start breeding heritage birds when these new arrivals are of age and can't wait to share with you all my hatching eggs and chicks that will be available for the 2026 season

I couldn't be more excited to have my hens fresh eggs in your fridge, my meat birds on your tables for dinners and my chickens added to your flock and make your everyday as happy and complete as mine!!

If you haven't noticed I am a talker, so I will end this story where it is...I don't think I have ever made a story short in my life time!!  Please reach out with any questions or inquiries regarding ordering eggs and meat birds.  You can also be apart of the flock and get on the list for the following seasons meat birds so you are guaranteed some delicious and juicy chickens in your freezers!!
